In the middle of the Australian outback, the Alice Springs region might be an unsuspecting spot for swimming and waterholes. To the surprise of many visitors, the Red Centre is packed with breathtaking places you can take a dip, surrounded by the stunning backdrop of the red desert.

Check out some of our favourite swimming spots in Alice Springs. Before heading out to any of these waterholes, it’s always important to check that they’re open and accessible. You can do this by visiting NT Parks.

 

Ormiston Gorge

Ormiston Gorge

Located in the West MacDonnell Ranges 135 km from Alice Springs, Ormiston Gorge is a permanent swimming hole boasting a huge pool surrounded by rich red cliffs. Relax on the sandy banks of the gorge and soak up your own little slice of desert paradise. What’s great about Ormiston Gorge is that the walk to reach the gorge is only a short 500m from the carpark, but if you are feeling adventurous, we recommend attempting the 3-4 hour Ormiston Pound Walk.

 

Ellery Creek Big Hole

Ellery Creek Big Hole

This huge waterhole has been carved out by thousands of years of rain and flooding, making it a spectacular geological site and a must-see when you visit the Red Centre. Explore the cool gorge waters or take the 3 km Dolomite Walk to discover the surrounding rock formations. Located just 80 km west of Alice Springs, Ellery Creek is an easy day trip but you can also opt to stay the night at the campground. .

 

Redbank Gorge

Redbank Gorge

Nestled at the base of Mount Sonder, Redbank Gorge is the perfect spot for a refreshing dip. The stunning gorge and chasm is accessible almost year round, and also offers various camping and hiking options so you can truly explore the area. Redbank Gorge is located 156 km west of Alice Springs in the West MacDonnell Ranges. Once you reach the car park, follow the creek bed for 2 km until you reach the gorge.

Glen Helen Gorge

Glen Helen Gorge is where the ranges part way for the Finke River, offering breathtaking views of the West Macs including Mount Sonder - one of the highest points in the Red Centre. Swim or float your way through the tranquil waters of this Gorge and enjoy the spectacular scenery. The gorge is also home to a variety of wildlife, so keep your eyes peeled for birds, fish and other animals. Located on the Finke River 132 km from Alice Springs, once you reach the carpark the gorge is only a short stroll away.
