Alice Springs is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and panoramic vistas. One of the best times to witness the beauty of this region is during sunrise or sunset, when the skies transform into a canvas of oranges, pinks and purples, painting the rugged terrain with a warm glow.

Whether you're an early bird or a sunset lover, the magnificent beauty of the Australian outback at dawn or dusk is sure to leave you in awe. We've compiled a list of our favourite sunrise and sunset spots in Alice Springs.

 

Anzac Hill

Anzac Hill

Perfect for sunrise or sunset, Anzac Hill Lookout offers 360 degree views of Alice Springs and the surrounding desert, including the famous ‘gap’. You can reach Anzac Hill in just a short 5-10 minute drive from the city centre, or choose to walk or cycle along the path. While you’re there, check out the Anzac Hill memorial built in 1934 to honour those who have served in wars to defend Australia.

 

Trigg Hill Lookout

Alice Springs Telegraph Station

Take a walk through the historic area surrounding the old Telegraph Station up to the Trigg Hill Lookout for some of Alice Spring’s best views. This easy walk takes you through stunning desert up to the lookout, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the Telegraph Station, Todd River and the MacDonnell Ranges. Make sure you keep an eye out for wildlife too, which are most active around dawn and dusk.

  • Return by cemetery - 2km

 

Mount Sonder

Mount Sonder

If you’re up for a bit of an adventure for sunrise views, take the hike up Mount Sonder - the Northern Territory’s 4th highest mountain and the highest point in the West MacDonnell Ranges. Mount Sonder is not for the faint hearted - this 14.2km return hike is Grade 4 (moderate to difficult) and usually takes 5-6 hours to complete.

The start and finish point is Redbank Gorge Carpark, and if you want to catch the sunrise, you’ll need to start early and be prepared with a head torch. You’ll be rewarded for your efforts with some of the most incredible sunrise views in the Red Centre - don’t forget your camera!

 

Ilparpa claypans

Ilparpa claypans at West MacDonnell Ranges

Just a short drive from the centre of Alice Springs, the Ilparpa claypans offer a truly unique spot to watch the sunset. A favourite among Alice locals, the series of 12 interconnected claypans are home to an array of plant and wildlife species, coming to life when it rains and the claypans fill up. Take a picnic blanket or chairs, and watch the colours of the sun reflecting off the water with the backdrop of the West MacDonnell Ranges.

 

Hot Air Ballooning

Hot Air Ballooning

Watching the sunrise from a hot air balloon in Alice Springs is a truly unforgettable experience. Float peacefully over the West MacDonnell Ranges and watch the sun creep over the horizon, while taking in the panoramic views of the Australian outback. This is also a great opportunity to spot wildlife from above, including Red Kangaroos.
